The first group of Americans to fly a fleet of private planes into
Cienfuegos, Cuba, returned home on Sunday. They spent one week learning
about the country and its aviation system.

The group, which consisted of 10 private planes and 22 pilots and
passengers, is a part of an aviation group called Baja Bush Pilots. They
are accustomed to the adventures, but they embarked on their seven-day
journey to Cuba with a multitude of questions.

“Everybody is scared to fly to Cuba,” says Jack McCormick, leader of the
Baja Bush Pilots.

However, the uncertainties increase the purpose of the mission. The
aviation group travels to foreign countries to build relationships with
their people.

“It has been a dream of mine forever,” McCormick said. “And three years
ago, we said we are going to start doing it and we said, if we cannot
take our planes, we will go ourselves.”

McCormick previously booked commercial flights from Miami to Cuba, but
recent improved relations between the leaders of both countries brought
him to Cuban soil in his personal plane.

McCormick and 21 other Americans, including Claudia Cardoza, made
history when they landed their private planes in Cienfuegos on Oct. 5.

“It’s amazing,” Cardoza said. “And it is really cool to be a part of
that history. They were honored. We were honored. It was both ways.”

Cardoza said they got a sneak peak into the control room while they were
at the .

“We were able to meet the people that were able to grant us permission
to tour all of these great facilities that nobody gets to see,” Cardoza
said. “Being up in the tower and listening to them as they are directing
United flights and American flights, it was really cool.”

The Baja Bush Pilots hope to fly their planes into Cuba for the second
time early next year.
